Hi, my name is Clara. I’m an optometrist, and I came to AVI because I was seeking more information about the I procedure—and I ended up getting it. I’ve been wearing glasses since grade school, I’d say around third grade.
As an optometrist, we educate our patients about the pros and cons, but going through the surgery myself was quite different. No matter how much I knew about the procedure, I was still anxious. Although I was nervous before the surgery, Nurse Carol, who was there with me, was very sweet.
I remember being rolled in for the procedure and asking, “Why aren’t we playing any songs, like ‘They See Me Rolling’?” The first part of the procedure took maybe 15 seconds, and then they swapped over, and 15 seconds later, I was done.
That night, when I opened my eyes, I was able to see my kid laying next to me and my husband laying next to him. And that was the night the procedure was done.
For any patients considering I or refractive surgery, what holds a lot of people back—more than the pros and cons—is fear. I had a lot of anxiety and fear going through surgery too, but don’t let that fear stop you from getting the vision you want.
