Your eyes are tired at the end of the day, your vision goes a little blurry when you look up from your screen, and your head aches right above your brow. Sound familiar? That is digital eye strain, and it is one of the most common complaints eye doctors hear. Here is what is actually happening and what you can do about it.
Digital eye strain goes by several names: computer vision syndrome, digital eye syndrome, and CVS. The reason it is called a syndrome rather than a condition is that it involves multiple systems in the body at once.
When you stare at a screen, two things happen simultaneously. Your blink rate drops significantly, sometimes to half of what it is during a normal conversation. And your internal lens, the crystalline lens that adjusts focus inside the eye, works continuously to hold the image clear. Both of those things, reduced blinking and sustained near focus, compound each other.
There is also a third factor specific to digital screens. A printed page sits on a flat surface and reflects the ambient light in the room. A digital screen produces a virtual image that is actually slightly behind the plane of the screen itself. The eye is very precise about focus, and that slight discrepancy means it is always working a little harder to lock in than it would with printed material.
Put all of those together and you get dryness, blur, fatigue, and headaches. That is the syndrome.

The neck and shoulder involvement is worth noting. When you lean toward a screen, you activate muscles throughout the head, neck, and shoulders. Headaches from digital eye strain are not always just eye headaches. They are often a full postural response.
Yes, and the impact is measurable.
There is a clinical metric called tear breakup time, which measures how quickly the tear film on your eye evaporates between blinks. As that time shortens, meaning tears are less stable, reading speed decreases. Companies including some of the largest technology firms have recognized this connection and employ optometrists specifically to manage dry eye and screen-related symptoms in their workforce. Reduced tear stability means slower reading, and slower reading means reduced output.
Digital eye strain is not just a comfort issue. It affects performance.
Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
That is the 20-20-20 rule, and it works because it interrupts the two main drivers of digital eye strain at once. Looking into the distance relaxes the internal focusing muscles that have been contracted for close work. The act of shifting your gaze also triggers blinking, which recoats the eye surface with fresh tears.
You do not need to measure 20 feet exactly. The goal is distance, not precision. A window, the far wall, or anything across the room will do. The point is to break the cycle of sustained near focus multiple times per hour.
If you have ever looked up from a long study session and found the whole room blurry for a few seconds, that is accommodative spasm. The focusing muscles have been held in one position for so long they cannot immediately relax. The 20-20-20 rule prevents that from building up.
A few straightforward adjustments reduce strain significantly:
Screen brightness. Your screen should not be brighter than the surrounding room. A bright screen in a dark room is like staring into a spotlight. Dim the screen so it blends with the ambient light rather than overpowering it.
Room lighting. Do not work in the dark. An evenly lit room with a reasonably bright screen reduces glare and contrast strain. You do not need harsh overhead lighting. Normal ambient light is the goal.
Screen distance and position. Keep the screen roughly arm’s length away, about 20 to 28 inches. The center of the screen should sit slightly below your eye level so you are looking slightly downward. This reduces how wide your eyes need to open, which helps with tear evaporation. If you wear bifocals and find yourself tilting your head back to see the screen, ask your eye doctor about office lenses, which are designed specifically for computer distances and eliminate that postural strain.
The short answer is: maybe, but not for the reason most people think.
Blue light is genuinely harder for the eye to focus than other wavelengths. The visual system is slightly nearsighted for blue, which means blue-heavy screens require a little more focusing effort. Blocking blue light improves contrast and reduces that extra demand.
However, blue light from a screen is not the same as ultraviolet light. UV is harmful to eye tissue. Blue light is adjacent to UV on the electromagnetic spectrum but it is not UV. Five minutes of sun exposure delivers more light energy to the eye than hours in front of the brightest LED screen.
Blue light glasses are not protecting your eyes from damage. But they can reduce focusing strain, and they serve a secondary benefit: wearing them makes you more mindful that you are on a screen, which nudges people to blink more and take breaks.
If you are considering blue light lenses, talk to your eye doctor about whether they make sense for your situation.
Working on a bright screen in a dark room is not comfortable and not recommended, but it will not permanently damage your eyes. What it will do is increase strain, cause afterimages when you look away, and contribute to the headaches and fatigue that come with digital eye strain.
The discomfort is real. The permanent damage is not. But do not use that as permission to stare into a spotlight in a dark room all night.
This one goes back to parents telling kids to back away from the TV. Sitting close to a screen does not damage your eyes and will not make your prescription worse.
The connection to nearsightedness in children is real, but it is about the amount of time spent on near tasks, not the screen itself. A child who reads books for hours at close range has the same risk as one on a tablet. It is the sustained near work, not the device.
Digital eye strain is a combination of reduced blinking, sustained close focus, and screen brightness that builds throughout your workday. It does not cause permanent damage, but it does cause real discomfort and measurable performance effects. The 20-20-20 rule, proper screen setup, and consistent blinking habits go a long way toward managing it. If symptoms persist despite those changes, it is worth talking to your eye doctor.
